Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma

March 30, 2010 · Posted in Mesothelioma · Comment

The least common kind of mesothelioma is the sarcomatoid mesothelioma which consists of only around 10 percent to 15 percent of the mesothelioma cancer cells. The typical characteristics of these sarcomatoid cells are oval and irregular in shape. The nucleus of these sarcomatoid cells are not as clear and visible when seen from an electron microscope compared to the nuclei epitheliod mesothelioma cancer cells. Having the oval and irregular shape is common in cancer cells. That is why it is hard to distinguish between Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma and Sarcomatoid Carcinoma, and Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma and Sarcoma as well.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma and Sarcomatoid Carcinoma

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is being mistaken for the other different kinds of cancer because it shares the similar characteristics with Sarcomatoid Carcinoma. Though sarcomatoid cancer is viewed in other sections in the body, like the kidney for instance, it is quite uncommon to be seen in the lungs. There are no greater than 1.3 percent of carcinomas in the lungs that belong to the sarcomatoid kind.
Another kind of cancer that is commonly mistaken for sarcomatoid mesothelioma is the pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma. Similarly to sarcomatoid mesothelioma, pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma or the sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lungs commonly occur in males which is four times more common than in females. It is also strongly associated with smoking. Symptoms like pain in the chest, accumulation of excess fluid in the pleural cavity, and difficulty in respiration are all shared by both the pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma and sarcomatoid carcinoma which makes it hard to distinguish from each other.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma and Sarcoma
Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma and the high-grade sarcoma also cause people to fail in differentiating them. The difference is seen where they first arise. The carcinoma has an effect on the epithelium while the sarcoma occurs in the supportive tissue such as the bone, cartilage, fat, or muscle. Once the sarcoma extends to the pleural surface, it becomes hard to distinguish with sarcomatoid mesothelioma.
When seen from an electron microscope, the sarcoma cells and sarcomatoid mesothelioma cells may contain the same form. Even the staining of their tumor cells can bring the same outcomes. That is the reason why there is a need for the pathologist to be more careful in comparing the look and staining of the cells to the whole form, the localized and the diffuse pleural-based mass, and the reliability of the tumor in making an ultimate analysis of malignant mesothelioma.
If you are one of the people whose loved ones have been identified to have a pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma or a high-grade sarcoma or if you are one of those people who have been highly exposed to asbestos, then it is best to find a next a complete and systematic examination from either your own doctor, physician, or an oncologist who concentrates in the condition of mesothelioma. When you are diagnosed of having sarcomatoid mesothelioma or you know someone who have that condition, you have to be ready for the prediction or prognosis of it for it is normally repugnant.
