Type of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is known in current years as a kind of malignant cancer that causes tumours inside and outside essential body organs. The word mesothelioma means cancer of the mesothelium while –oma means cancer in medical terms. The mesothelium is the bag-like covering that protects the body organs like the heart and the lungs. When this disease has struck, the cells of the lining become abnormal and malignant.

There are three forms of mesothelioma that is caused by too much exposure to asbestos: pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, and pericardial mesothelioma. these three types vary in terms of symptoms though some symptoms may exist in all three kinds of the illness. The symptoms are rarely visible at an early stage and it usually takes several years before diagnosing mesothelioma. That is why some patients’ lives can no longer be saved because of the late manifestation of the symptoms.

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma which distresses the lungs, protective lining of the lungs, and cavity of the lungs. Its symptoms came from pleural effusion where fluid between the lining and the chest cavity builds up. Some of the symptoms that a victim of mesothelioma can experience are: coughing of blood, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in swallowing, fever, persistent coughing, rasping, shortness of breath and weight loss.

The other rare kind of mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma which disturbs the stomach and abdomen. It can start right in the abdomen and reach the other parts of the body through spreading. Tumours are formed that causes abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, anaemia, blood clotting abnormalities, bowel obstruction, breathing problems, chest pain, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.

Pericardial Mesothelioma is the rarest of all the three types. This cancer involves the heart and the cavity surrounding the heart. Tumours that are formed have the following symptoms: chest pain, palpitations, persistent coughing, shortness of breath, and trouble breathing.

Other asbestos diseases are asbestos and respiratory problems due to simply exposure to the fatal material. Moreover, the symptoms of these diseases are non-specific, meaning they can also be just another disease that also has the same symptoms. Similarly, viral pneumonia has the same symptoms and often mistaken for it.

Thus, it is recommended to see a doctor immediately if you notice any problem, concerns and doubt. It is best to inform your doctor of your exposure to asbestos so that he or she will be test for mesothelioma right away. Usually, the delay of detecting the disease is due to lack of information from the patient and the doctor as well. The sooner this disease is diagnosed, the sooner the mesothelioma  symptoms will be eliminated or lessened. Also, people who are working or have worked with asbestos should be careful of the symptoms and they should also seek health advice. Still, the person is the one to decide if he or she wants to speed up the prognosis through letting the doctor aware of the circumstances and looking out for symptoms or signs that may be getting visible.
